The BackRoadsWest Travel Channel is a series of videos showcasing our travels that are exhibited in our blog, the BackRoadsWest Trips Blog at www.BackRoadsWest.com/blog. Our travel blog explains each of our trips in a unique and consistent way. Each trip is visually described using our own unique style of what we like to call a “virtual video tour”. Each trip also includes an interactive map, pictures showing the highlights and a full description for those that still like to read. We hope that you enjoy our travel experiences that we’ve brought to you!

Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Understanding it, Visiting it
The Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument (GSENM) covers a large area encompassing many different scenic areas and unique places of interest all nestled in south-central Utah. GSENM’s large size and and wide diversity often makes it misunderstood, simply because there’s so much to know and absorb. This video will hopefully clear up some of the confusion by explaining its many of facts and features, as well as showing how various places inside GSENM look.

This is a fantastic video. Thank you so much especially as this park is on my list for a visit this year. I did a few geologic trips with your videos in California, now it's time for Utah :).
Thanks a ton for this video, I drove past this road yesterday but it was too hot to stop. Really wondered what I would have seen!
I lived in Fontana for 40 some years felt a lot of earthquakes some big some small
Hello Good Folks. A well-done video on a complicated story; lots of moving parts so to speak. Thank You! I've been lucky enough to kick around chunks of the Monument over past years. Always humbling. A quick comment for folks who may be interested: The U.S. congress in 1906, via the Antiquities Act, granted a sitting president the authority to designate "national monuments" only within existing federal lands. Congress kept authority to add, change, or delete them of course. With respect, I don't see a "land grab" as such. A great summer to All...
Wow, that’s a load of information. Great job y’all😎
This is great! Thank you
Loved the video, lots of interesting info! Did not like the politics at the beginning, we already have enough division in our country and everything is just a matter of different perspectives. I really appreciate these videos because they help ALL of us plan our next adventures, at the same time Social Media is the reason ALL of our parks are overcrowded not because they were named a National Monument or Park.
Thanks for commenting. Glad you enjoyed it. The purpose of it is to provide a general overview of GSENM, including geology, geography, etc. Regards to background, anyone that want's to know more about GSENM needs to be aware its pollical history. Anytime policies are changed, reservations need to be made to visit a place, a road is closed, too many people visiting due to social media posts; all those topics fall under the category of politics and later governance. It can't be avoided.
Climate change is a hoax ... Climate change is a hoax ... Climate change is a hoax ... Until it isn't .
How does that relate to White Pocket?
Don't lump all citizens of Utah in the same category. Many of us were against Trumps change of the monument. Fortunately that has been undone.
I didn't, I think the two sides have been pointed out. As for sides, there's more than one than the other in Utah and the opposite in California. It is what it is.
Impeccable quality video as usual, thank you!
You're welcome and thanks for commenting!
As always...awesome video!
Thank you!
Is your name Larry? And do you own a old VW bus?
Nope. We drive Toyotas.
Excellent presentation. Thank you! Hope to visit there and many other places in the western US in a few years when I retire.
You're welcome and thanks for commenting! Good luck on trying to reach all those places!
Go figure Clinton did something like that. Land grab by Federal Government just a fact
I didn't believe it myself ;-)
Dig your content and vibe😎
Thanks!
Haha, I had a high school boyfriend whose summer job was at the gas station in Ludlow! He stayed out there during the week, & got so lonely that he wrote me letters! This was before the interstate, it was a different world, like the end of the earth.
Yes, it certainly was!
Very interesting. Thank you
You're welcome and thanks for commenting.
Thank u so much ❤
You're welcome!
best vid ever i watch the entire thing1 thank u so much <33
Awesome! Thanks for hanging in until the end!!
Wow!! thanks awesome video and info, can’t wait to go back there to explore more.
You're welcome and thanks for commenting!
I think the lesson is that we don't need more national monuments. They will just get overrun. These places are already protected, let's just leave them be.
One would think that. All of Utah's parks are being overrun with people for the past 3-5 years.
Fun place
Thanks!
Good stuff y’all, love the old date stamps😎
Thank you!
Wonderful😎
Many thanks!
Great in fo😎
Still waiting for "the big one"
I successful drove my 1988 Honda Accord LX on many roads "rougher" than this one. Drivers just have to know how to drive "off road" is all.
Wow this was so cool to learn and see about, thank you for this! Have a nice day!
Very interesting👍
VoiceOver here would appeal to elementary grades to get the children started on a career in geography, geology, travel
Good, I'm glad you as an elementary student has been inspired to study geology! Just wait till you get to high school!!
Terrible narration. Had to go move on.
Glad you liked it. Sounds like you don't deserve to watch it anyways. Hope you moved on to something that's just right for you.
The only thing to keep california from sliding into the ocean, is the wingnuts on every corner.
Fun fact! At 38:50, those homes started falling off the side of the hill a few years later.
Nice video for geographic beginners. The script is very elementary.
Top right near the initials, clearly shows a male with a pegged out animal skin.
That looks like a stealth thar came down on our car. Leaving area 51 the backgate. They buzzed us when we were going out of town as a warning
Now we know the real reason why property in S.B. is cheaper than in L.A. 😂
Who’s fault is it that they built the house on it
Fantastic content that for me is ruined by the excruciating narration cadence.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video, especially the narration.
I'm going to be out that way at the end of June mainly doing a California train activity excursion although I expect the heat to be rough. I want to go as far north as the Keddie Wye Bridge and then loop back towards the Bay Area to have a look at the historic PCC trolleys in San Francisco. I've been looking at your information in the area. Rt 58 is on the way to the famous Techacipi loop. There seems to be a lot of opportunities for interesting drone shots (before Congress outlaws my DJI!) I've requested a 4WD from my rental agency at LAX. Time will tell if that's what I get! Always interesting content.
LOL - my second drone now is a DJI too (mini 3 pro) - I originally bought GoPro to buy U.S., but they jacked that one up. Maybe now I'll need to go find another USA drone maker. DJI has a great camera though. Nonetheless, yes, I lived 30 years in the Victor Valley (Apple Valley, Victorville), so I know the area well as you can tell that's much of the content on my vids. The Black Mtns area will be very hot until late Sept. I'd stay away. Tehachapi will still be warm but ok. I'd stay up in No Cal providing there's no wildfires. I'm sure you've seen our vid on the Feather River cyn route. Even though you will rent a 4WD, read your rental car agreement carefully as many will track your location by GPS and charge you a big fee if you take the car on a restricted dirt road.
@@BackRoadsWest1 Thanks!
It appears the local officials and the developers don’t want anyone to know about the close proximity of the San Andreas! What a shame. I grew up in San Fernando Valley in the 70’s. I was 11 when the Selma’s quake of 1971 hit. That was nothing compared to what will happen when the “ big one hits”!
I too experienced the 1971 Sylmar earthquake at 6.5 as I was growing up in Burbank - about 15 miles away. It is what it is as far as development goes. I live in SW Utah and a large landslide occurred in Springdale (mouth of Zion Cyn) in 2005 that took out several homes. Geologists stated nobody should build in a particular zone, yet one said I'll bet development will resume here in 20 years. That person was right, as there is a new commercial building and other buildings being built today on top of the landslide material. Time will tell and tell it will...
Is it really so nice to live there on the fault or does it need a big portion of stupidity? And what is it good for not to settle directly on the fault? Is it you may not fall inside, if something happens? But this seem´s stupid to me too, because an earthquake will cause damage in a 90° degree distance near the fault, I don´t know how far. Isn´t this a kind of live by thinking "it will not target me, but somewhere else"? Sorry, I cannot understand those people to do so voluntarily.
that was awsome thanks
My pleasure! You're welcome.
I grew up in San Bernardino and the fault was a constant topic in school.
so good
Thank you
